In this course, ethical issues in the practice of dentistry will be explored. Topics will include issues of confidentiality, informed consent, research ethics, patient dental health situations related to Islamic duties, aesthetics in dentistry, and malpractice.  The course consists of a series of introductory lectures (related to theories of ethics, ethical codes, principles of dental ethics, ethics in Islam) followed by lectures covering ethical issues in various disciplines of dentistry.  It also includes ethical issues such as treating people with serious diseases, confidentiality, third-party financing, and advertising.  The issues are discussed within the context of prevailing social values and norms. Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of real-life case studies.  In addition to lectures, students will engage in project work, small group workshops and seminars. Every attempt is made to encourage faculty staff from various disciplines to participate in the teaching of the subject.
